Russ graduated from Indian Hills Community College in Centerville, Iowa in 1983 with an Associate in Arts and Sciences in tool and die design. In 1989 he earned his Associates degree in Radiologic Technology from Iowa Methodist Medical Center School of Radiologic Technology.

After graduating from IMMC, Russ continued working nights throughout the hospital using mainly portable machines. In 1991 he began working part-time for Portable X-ray, Inc. and in 1992 he was offered a full-time position. He continued with BioTech X-ray when Portable X-ray was acquired in December, 2012.

Russ lives in Des Moines, IA with his wife Diane and their 2 sons, a daughter and granddaughter. He has another son in the Air Force living in Texas with his own son, step-son, daughter and fiance. When not working, Russ maintains a busy schedule playing golf, riding his bicycle or motorcycle, crewing for a hot air balloon pilot, and umpiring. He is an active member of the Central Iowa Umpires Association and USSSA umpires. He is also active in Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts and helps out with Roosevelt High School drama, marching band, and show choir during the school year.
